Gabs Statement
Juls Gabs is a painter who dissolves the classical definition of painting and re-applies its significance to address contemporary demands. She explores new figuration through the digital and invents alternative canvases combining traditional and technology-inspired methods.

Juls Gabs’ work often begins with various forms of history, including testimonies, art theory, historical ideas, and folklore, which she transforms into digital works that critically examine sociopolitical practices. For her, the computer serves as an incubator for ideas which she then imprints onto objects, sculptures, and paper. Throughout her career, Gabs has sought to capture experiences in still images, exploring mediums such as augmented reality, public installations, QR codes, electronics, and traditional painting.

New mediums and experimentation are central to Gabs’ practice. She enjoys playing with figuration in contemporary mediums and inventing new canvases to create physical installations that combine traditional materials with digital techniques. Her creations are often focused on the near future, reflecting her concern for the decisions made today and their implications for tomorrow. These works, while still images and objects, contain a sense of time, akin to magical predictions or beliefs. Gabs incorporates a current awareness of crises and ecological decline, exploring how these issues have been absorbed and neutralized by modern lifestyles and media propaganda.
