Dispatches from America

The challenge with making a painting or print, for me, is its elusiveness. Rarely does a work resolve itself quickly. More often, it reveals itself slowly. Time allows me to see other ways to develop a work. The process can go on for many months or years.

Matisse said, “If Cezanne is right, then I am right.” In terms of purification and condensation of images, formal elements, and meaning, I, with humility, take the liberty of saying, “If Matisse is right, then I am right.”

I make work that responds to images and events that span both American and world history. This way of looking started in my childhood and has continued into the present. I look at my use of subject matter (often current events, war, terrorism, conflict, religion, danger, science, sports, culture, capitalism, and globalization) as an open system, and in constant flux. It is also an opportunity to consider what has been lost, and what continues to resonate. It is also an opportunity to evaluate the relevance of what endures.
